Vocabulary : the tough part!

Many students find the vocab part to be on the tougher side. Although CAT does not have direct questions on syonyms and antonyms, good vocabulary does help in understanding comprehension passages faster and answer the occasional single word question un a second. Also, other exams like SNAP and JMET have almost five marks each for vocabulary based questions. Some tips while studying words,

1) Do not go for learning directly from a word list. If you have time, read through good newspapers like the Hindu or good novels that interest you.

2) If time is short and learning from a word list is the only way, do not go for each and every word according to the list. Start by solving exercises which involve substituting words in sentences. These can be found in any good study material like the verbal ability notes of IMS classes.

3) Maintain a notebook and write closely related words together. Also write words with similar spellings or sounds but different meaning together.

4) Learn a maximum of 15 new words in a day.

5) Do not mug up the meaning of words. Try to get a feel of their usage and meaning. Try to remember them in sentences.

6) There are some audio tools available to learn words. My friend who scored 1540 in GRE used this one: http://www.mindpowerindia.com/mind-machine-lab/

I will be posting important words (especially adjectives) regularly.
